The new Hull KR recruit is set to continue his development out on loan.
Hull KR new recruit Jumah Sambou is set to continue his development in the Championship with a loan deal expected with Widnes Vikings.
As first reported by Love Rugby League, the 24-year-old outside-back is poised to join Allan Coleman’s squad on a temporary basis, with an official announcement expected imminently.
Sambou joined the Robins during the off-season after impressing in a limited number of appearances for Oldham, though his progress across the 2024 and 2025 campaigns was hindered by injury.
Born in Warrington, the powerful ball-carrier came through St Helens’ academy system and made a try-scoring Super League debut against Castleford Tigers in 2022. However, competition for places at Sewell Group Craven Park is fierce, with Peta Hiku and Oliver Gildart once again handed starting shirt numbers, while Jack Broadbent excelled when given opportunities throughout 2025.
A move to the Championship with a strong Widnes side suits all parties, providing Sambou with the chance to gain regular first-team action. He could make his debut as early as this weekend against North Wales Crusaders, before the Vikings host Leeds Rhinos in the third round of the Challenge Cup.
Sambou is viewed as a long-term project with significant potential, having been handed a three-year deal by head coach Willie Peters. He also caught the eye in Hull KR’s sole pre-season fixture ahead of the 2026 campaign, featuring against Wakefield Trinity.
The loanee will bolster a Widnes squad eager to respond after a disappointing 2025 season. While Coleman had been keen to recruit a specialist full-back, Sambou adds valuable depth across the backline, with the ability to operate in the centres or on the wing.
After several years disrupted by injury, Sambou will be eager to build continuity, rack up appearances and continue his development on a weekly basis at a club pushing for a strong season in the Championship.
