City kept up their impressive promotion push with another home success

Sergej Jakirovic admits the past week has been the best since he took over at Hull City, and says his side deserves to be sitting pretty in fourth place.

Saturday’s gritty 2-1 win over Swansea City capped a stunning week for the Tigers, after winning away at Southampton and Preston North End, as they took a maximum nine points from nine.

City have claimed seven points on a couple of occasions in three-game weeks earlier this season, but have never won all three, and they were made to fight for it after leading 2-0 at the break courtesy of an Oli McBurnie penalty and a stunning Regan Slater strike.

Though Liam Cullen’s second-half header threatened to damage City’s hopes of clinching three wins, Jakirovic’s men did enough to see it out and notch an eighth home success.

The result kept City firmly in the promotion race, fourth in the league, just five points off the top two with a game in hand and, crucially, gave them a seven-point cushion over those below the play-off pack.

It also saw the Tigers pass the 49 points they struggled to reach last season, which was another example of how different the current campaign is from the difficulties of last.

“Since I’ve been here, yes, mathematically. Nine points,” the Tigers boss told Hull Live when asked to rate the week which saw them claim three wins in a row.

“The table and points doesn’t lie, never. When you see the table with the points, you are there with 50 points and a game in hand, so we will see. February will be very, very busy. We have six games in February.”

The Croatian was also full of praise for his players, who once again showed why they’ve been in and around the top six all season, despite being hit by so many injuries.

“They are a great group with a lot of character,” he explained. “They showed already, no matter how many problems you have. Every time someone else comes onto the pitch, he tries to be helpful to the team.”
