Teenage sensation Lucas Herrington says being crowned the PFA Young Men’s Footballer of the Year in Australia caps what’s been a crazy 2026.

The 19-year-old made his full Premier League debut for Hull City at Newcastle United on Saturday, starting in the Tigers’ defence alongside John Egan and Semi Ajayi, owing to Nobel Mendy’s enforced absence due to concussion protocols.

From leaving Brisbane Roar to joining Colorado Rapids, and then playing in the World Cup for his country before securing a big-money move to the MKM Stadium, 2026 has been quite a ride for the central defender.

Now, with his breakout year coming towards its conclusion, Herrington has been handed the Harry Kewell Medal, as voted for by his fellow players.

“It means a lot coming from the players. I’m very grateful to win this award. I know it’s a big one in Australia,” one of City’s high-profile summer signings said.

“It’s been pretty crazy [the last year]. There’s been a lot that has happened in the last 12 months, but I’ve loved every part of the journey so far.”

“Starting off back in Brisbane and then having to move to Colorado was a big challenge for me having to move away from home for the first time and live overseas but that was a great experience, [I] had some great coaches that gave me the opportunity to play there.

“The proudest moment of my life was to play at the World Cup for the Socceroos. That was an experience I’ll never forget. To go from Brisbane in the A-League, to Colorado, to the World Cup, and then a transfer to Hull has been an awesome experience and everything that I’ve ever wanted. I’ve loved my time here so far and hopefully many more things to come.”

Herrington fought off competition from Jordan Bos, Alessandro Circati, Paul Okon-Engstler, Patrick Beach and City summer target Nestory Irankunda to claim the prestigious crown.
