Millar joined Birmingham City on deadline day
Sergej Jakirovic was sorry to see Liam Millar leave on deadline day but the head coach has left the door open for him to return down the line.
The winger scored the only goal of the game as City beat Coventry City 1-0 last Saturday, with the Tigers picking up their second win of the Premier League season.
However, with the club known to have been looking for wing reinforcements, his future was uncertain coming away from the CBS Arena.
Ultimately, Millar’s fate was decided on the last day of the window, with the Tigers signing off a season-long loan switch to Championship club Birmingham City.
It was a tough call to make, given his heroics last season and at Coventry, but Jakirovic believes that ultimately, it was best for all parties with Millar on the edge of being left out of his 25-man Premier League squad. The loan doesn’t necessarily mean his City career is over, though.
“This is football,” Jakirovic said. “I am very sorry because Liam left the club but also a big danger maybe we would have players out of the 25. That was the main task for me.
“I explain to Liam the situation. We didn’t bring one more winger because that was our plan, but we missed it.

“Now we have our team and we have three players who can play in this position. I think it’s a great move for Liam but at the end of the day he will be on the pitch. We loan him and then we will see what will happen in the future.”
The Tigers also saw Cody Drameh leave on deadline day, with the right-back joining Genoa. And, in the days that have followed, Matty Jacob has gone on loan to Newport County and Tyrell Sellars-Fleming has been loaned to Scunthorpe United.
However, with transfer windows still open across Europe, the club are still working on more departures.
“Yes, especially those players who are out of the 25,” Jakirovic said when asked if more players could leave. “We will try to help them to find a club.
“If not then it’s very difficult because they will not play until January. This is the problem. There are some transfer windows still open so will try to find something.”
