Hull KR made errors that were simply not acceptable in the second half of their loss to Warrington Wolves on Tuesday night.
That’s the verdict from head coach Willie Peters, who saw his side beaten 34-28 by the Wolves at Craven Park to leave Rovers another couple of wins away from securing their spot in the play-offs.
Rovers conceded two first half tries but they went in at the break ahead after efforts from Mikey Lewis and Karl Lawton. A disastrous spell in the second half followed though as KR made uncharacteristic errors in defence to allow Warrington to run away with the game and wrap up the two points.
Liam Byrne, Tof Sipley and George Williams all scored tries through the middle of the park with Rovers missing tackles and to say Peters was unhappy with the manner those tries were conceded would be an understatement.
“A little bit mixed to be honest,” the head coach said on his post-match thoughts. “I thought we were brave in large parts of that game but we were silly – I don’t like using the word dumb.
“In key moments, some vital moments we lost and it snowballed off the back of that.
“I thought Warrington were exceptional in terms of their last plays and building pressure and putting us in vulnerable positions and I don’t think we did that enough to them. When it got tight it came down to moments and we lost those moments.
“The inside shoulders that we had are not acceptable. That’s the areas that I’m not happy about, they came straight through us. We did fight towards the back end but the game was gone, let’s be real there.
“It could have got worse but we found a way to hang in there and get some points at the back end. Warrington were very good but we didn’t value staying in cycles and going set for set enough.
“We had the error and then we let the soft try straight through the middle of us. It didn’t them a minute in the second half. They earned the first one and there’s things we could have done different but we can live with that, it’s the tries that come off the back of that. They were straight through the middle, inside shoulders. That’s the disappointing part.”
