Mikey Lewis was sin-binned against Warrington Wolves
Willie Peters has spoken out to defend Mikey Lewis, insisting there was no malice in his challenge on Ewan Irwin in the closing stages of Tuesday’s game at Craven Park.
Lewis largely impressed on his return to action after completing the four-game ban he was handed for a headbutt at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in July.
The stand-off scored a try, looked to probe and made Warrington work for the win they eventually recorded, with the visitors winning 34-28 in east Hull.
However, Lewis let himself down by kicking a kick-off out on the full, which led to a try and he was forced to watch the final eight minutes of the game from the sin bin after being shown a yellow card.
In attempting to charge down a Ewan Irwin kick, Lewis caught the Warrington man’s swinging leg with his boot recklessly. It was a clear yellow card offence and it’s one that could lead to further punishment from the Match Review Panel, with Lewis sweating Thursday’s disciplinary meeting.
“I thought defensively he had some intent to what he did,” Peters said on Lewis. “He was lively and probably at the start of the game, he tried to get involved too much instead of waiting for the right time.
“But he’s had four weeks. I thought he did some good things and then he gets 10 minutes of the charge down.
“I need to have a look at it but I don’t think there was any malice in it. I don’t think he intentionally went… I know Mikey has done some silly things this year, but that one there he was definitely going to put kick pressure on.
“I need to have a look at it properly but from what I saw, there was no malice I believe to go and hurt the player, or have intent to hurt him. He was putting kick pressure on and I need to have a look at it, to see the outcome of it.”
