A popular village tennis club is set to serve a full day of fun to mark the opening of its new clubhouse. South Cave Tennis Club will be hosting a Dawn ‘til Dusk Festival of Tennis on Saturday July 11 to promote the facility within the village and wider community.
An action-packed day is promised, starting with an American Doubles Tournament as the sun rises followed by a Cardio Tennis session run by Club LTA accredited coach, Carl Hazel. The morning will then continue with junior coaching sessions for all age groups and will be tailored to suit all levels of ability.
The festival will include the opening of a new club house, which has been developed with funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council commuted sums, and now provides the club with a fantastic facility including a new kitchen, lounge area, toilet and patio together with improved pedestrian access from the adjoining car park.
Club chairman Corin Witty said: “For a number of years we recognised the fact that our facility was below par and following damage to the old clubhouse it was rendered unusable. By utilising our own funds and the funding from the council we now have a facility that is fit for purpose and that our members can be proud of.
“The new clubhouse is a focal point for the club and will enable us to grow our coaching and social activities. After lunch the courts will be opened up free of charge for public use, to be booked via the club website, to encourage people to come down and experience what the club has to offer.
“It is an opportunity to get involved with tennis either as a beginner or for someone who has perhaps allowed their racket to gather dust and now wants to get back on court.”
The afternoon’s activities will include a Serving Challenge, offering an opportunity to see if you can hit a ball with the same pace and accuracy as the pros. This will be followed by the Chairman’s Cup – the chance for members and invited guests to try their skills against each other.
As the sun sets the day will be rounded off with a Future Talent match where younger members will be given free rein to demonstrate how good and agile they are. All competitions, coaching sessions and court-time will be free of charge, with participants being invited to make a donation to chosen charity Dove House Hospice. Light refreshments will be available throughout the day.
Club member and co-organiser of the event, Joyce Lawson, added: “South Cave Tennis Club is located in the centre of the village, but we want it to be much more than that, we want it to be at the centre of the community. We offer something for all ages and abilities whether it be our social tennis on a Tuesday and Sunday morning and Wednesday evening or the opportunity to play in one of our teams in the local leagues.
“There is something for everyone, we are a friendly club and opportunities exist to play tennis either via an annual membership or as a casual player on a pay and play basis. We look forward to welcoming familiar and new faces to the festival of tennis.”
