Hull FC loan forward Max Wood has been recalled by Warrington Wolves, Hull Live understands. The 21-year-old, who turns 22 this weekend, has featured for the Black and Whites for the last two games having joined the club on a month’s loan.
However, that loan deal featured a recall option and Warrington have now taken up that option. The Wire suffered a knock to overseas prop forward Toafofoa Sipley in Thursday’s defeat to Leeds Rhinos, with Wood, who returned to his parent club on Saturday, now in shot of returning to Sam Burgess’ side against Catalans Dragons this Thursday.
Wood debuted for Hull against Huddersfield Giants earlier this month, making over 100 metres off the bench and playing over 60 minutes – his longest stint in Super League to date. He followed suit against Wakefield Trinity, playing big minutes in both the prop and back row positions.
Hull interim coach Andy Last praised the loan prop for his display, and explained why he could be a sought after middle in the modern-day game. He said: “He’s playing some big minutes for us, and he’s done a good job for us when he’s moved into that second row, which has been a blessing because he’s got a little bit of leg speed and he’s a little bit more mobile as a middle.
“I think that’s the way the modern-day game has gone. Those mobile middles, they are hard to find, but I think Wakefield’s mobility in the middle of the field was evident. They really exposed us through the middle of the field. They got on the front foot and we struggled. Our middle unit needs to be better.”
Meanwhile, Leeds Rhinos pair Ethan O’Neill and Jeremiah Mata’utia are expected to remain at Hull FC. They, too, are on one month loan deals with the two clubs extending the agreement earlier this month.
