Dr Promise Agbi was convicted by a jury at Hull Crown Court
A Hull doctor has been jailed and faces possible deportation after throttling a boy during an angry confrontation. The victim thought that his life was “going to be over” because of the violence used against him, a court heard.
Dr Promise Agbi, 45, of Edgecumbe Street, off Newland Avenue, west Hull, but recently in custody on remand, denied two offences of intentional strangulation. He was convicted by a jury after a trial at Hull Crown Court.
Harry Bradford, prosecuting, told a sentencing hearing at Grimsby Crown Court that the victim had been emotionally impacted by the violence.
“There were several occasions when I wanted to cry but could not,” said the boy.
Jazmine Lee, mitigating, said that Agbi had accepted the verdict of the jury. In a letter to the court summarised by Miss Lee, Agbi said that he had worked in the health sector for the past 15 years.
He had a lot of experience and was highly regarded for his dedication. Miss Lee said that Agbi had saved lives. Having gained a PhD, he came to the UK. He was of previous good character.
Judge Richard Woolfall said that Agbi had pushed the boy and put his hands around his neck. Others on the scene were shouting and screaming. The boy was losing breath.
The victim had said: ‘”I thought that was going to be my life over.'” He grabbed Abdi’s groin area, which made him stop.
“You used physical violence,” said Judge Woolfall. “You started strangling him again. He was losing breath. His nails scratched you in self-defence.”
Agbi had “exemplary good character” previously. There were references from his church and fellow professionals.
Agbi was jailed for three years. “You will be deported,” said Judge Woolfall.
