Hull KR face an immediate test of character at Wakefield Trinity as they attempt to put their Wembley heartbreak firmly behind them.
That’s the view of former Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls star Matt Diskin, who has backed the Robins to respond positively following their 40-10 Challenge Cup final defeat to Wigan Warriors.
Former England international Paul Cooke, however, reckons recent history suggests Rovers could face a difficult afternoon at Belle Vue. Head coach Willie Peters, meanwhile, insists it is exactly the challenge his side needs as they look to bounce back from their disappointment in the capital.
Hull KR had won seven successive Super League matches before Wembley and will be eager to rediscover that form against a Wakefield side sitting just behind them in the table on points difference.
“Wakefield play some fantastic rugby, and I think Daryl Powell has done a great job again,” Diskin said on All Out Rugby League’s Back Ten Predictions Show.
“Hull KR have got some walking wounded from last week, and they’ve got to get back up on their performances. This will show where their character is, and I think they’ve got plenty of it.”
Wakefield claimed a 28-12 victory over Rovers at Belle Vue in the penultimate round of last season, while Hull KR edged a tense 14-12 win away to Powell’s side earlier in that campaign.
“I went to this match last year, and I watched Wakefield destroy Hull KR in 20 minutes just before the end of the season, which was probably a kick up the backside for Hull KR,” Cooke added.
“I’m not saying that’s going to have any bearing on this weekend, but Hull KR do struggle at Wakefield a little bit.
“Wakefield are a team that are playing well the last few weeks, with some decent results and they’ve had a weekend off and will be refreshed.”
