Angie, 64, has pledged to walk five miles each day in May
A 64-year-old former finance officer who has had two cancer scares has pledged to walk five miles a day throughout May to help people living in poverty. Angie Meadley has taken up the challenge to support Christian Aid Week 2026, and is aiming to cover a total of 350 miles, if she can.
Angie, who attends Sutton Methodist Church, walked 90 miles in her first week and raised more than £300. She said her walks have led her to discover new paths around Hull – and a lot of bridges.
She said: “I didn’t realise how many bridges we had either, large and small. I’ve pledged to walk five miles a day, but I’m hoping to walk 350 miles in total to beat the 337 I did last year.”
Angie has been doing sponsored walks for Christian Aid for several years, each one a journey in more ways than one. “When I did the walk in 2024 I had been diagnosed with skin cancer and was going through some family issues.
“Throughout this walk I argued with God on most days; I thought he had forgotten us, but nonetheless I carried on even though this felt the hardest of walks. On my last day, I walked from Sutton Methodist Church to the Humber Bridge, Hessle side.

“As I was crossing to the Barton side I was looking out at the shimmers on the water and suddenly from above I can only explain it as a light of warmth, stillness and calm flooded over me and blanked out any noise of the cars – I said it was probably God telling me to stop moaning.
“The walk in 2025 was so different, every day was a pleasure and I felt someone was with me – even though I was waiting on another op for another skin cancer. I’m all ok now.
“I did one route from Barton to Sutton Methodist Church where we had drinks and cream scones and then I gave a talk on my journey, and with their generosity we raised another £200. I will be doing the Humber Bridge walk again this year as one of my routes and I’m looking forward to seeing who I meet and chat with about Christian Aid along the way.
“One lady messaged me, saying she saw my red T-shirt as I walked by her house and it reminded her to make her donation. The T-shirt really does spark conversation, and to me making others aware that Christian Aid is still around and still helping others in a big way is my mission too.”
The money Angie raises will help Christian Aid’s partners to support communities to find practical and sustainable ways out of poverty. This year’s appeal, running from May 10 to 16, is focusing on work in Nairobi, Kenya, where intense poverty means families have a daily struggle to feed their children.
With secure jobs hard to find, and most people earning less than a dollar a day to cover school costs, rent and water, some days there is not enough for a meal. But with tools, seeds and specialist training from Christian Aid’s partner, Beacon of Hope, families are learning how to make the most of a small space in the city to grow a steady supply of fresh vegetables to cook or sell.
