A feud between two women suddenly turned nasty when one of them vindictively “rammed” her car into the side of the other’s vehicle during a chance encounter on the roads. The victim of the ramming was the ex-girlfriend of a man who was in a relationship with the aggressive driver, Hull Crown Court heard.
Danielle Butler, 22, of Meadow Road, Bridlington, admitted careless driving, having no insurance and driving without the correct licence on August 9. She denied dangerous driving and that charge was dropped by the prosecution.
Stephen Welch, prosecuting, said that a woman was driving her car in Midway Avenue, Bridlington. Her car happened to be in front of a red Peugeot 207 being driven by Butler.
In the car as a passenger with Butler was the woman’s ex-boyfriend, who at the time was in a relationship with Butler.
There had earlier been communications between the parties. During the journey, the woman stopped to pull in to the other side of the road. The prosecution claimed that Butler rammed the woman’s car with such force that the airbags were activated.
Damage was caused to the cars. Butler drove off. She had no previous convictions.
Connor Stuart, mitigating, said that Butler pleaded guilty and she plainly had a loss of judgement on the day of the driving incident. “She has shown remorse and cooperated with the police throughout the investigation,” said Mr Stuart.
A non-molestation order was in place regarding another person. “She is not a woman who is going to trouble these courts again,” said Mr Stuart.
Judge John Thackray KC told Butler: “This incident was bad enough but it could have been worse when you drove at a car in this manner. Unforeseen circumstances and consequences can easily occur.
“Fortunately, it was only damage to vehicles rather than to persons, otherwise this would have been much more serious. You have never been in trouble before.
“That makes a significant difference. There is obviously a background to the offending.”
Butler was given a one-year conditional discharge and she was banned from driving for six months. She must pay a £26 victims’ surcharge.
