The Championship promotion race is set for a thrilling finale

Championship football has taken a much-needed rest, with attention turning to the final qualifying spots for the upcoming World Cup later this summer.

When it returns, it’ll come back with a big bang, with the Easter weekend always proving to be a pivotal time of the season, with two games coming in quick succession.

Hull City have enjoyed a terrific season under Sergej Jakirovic, and along with Millwall, have arguably been the surprise package of the campaign.

City are fifth in the table with just seven games left, five points adrift of second and three clear of Wrexham in seventh, ahead of that pivotal Easter weekend which sees Jakirovic’s side go to struggling Oxford United on Good Friday before hosting leaders Coventry City on Easter Monday at 8pm.

The Tigers currently sit on 66 points from their 39 games and remain on course to secure a top-six place, but what about the totals in previous years?

Last season, Bristol City claimed the final play-off berth with just 68 points, the lowest total for a decade. In 2016/17, the year City fell out of the Premier League, Fulham needed 80, which is the highest in the past 10 years.

The average total needed in that same period has been 74.5, which means the Tigers would basically need nine from their remaining games to hit that target.

In the two seasons City went up via the Wembley play-off final in 2007/08 and 2015/16, they notched up 75 and 83 points respectively, from third and fourth placed finishes.

Of course, nobody really knows what it will take because it depends on the form of those in the chasing pack.

Here’s the totals of the sixth-placed teams in each of the last 10 Championship seasons

  • 2024/25: Bristol City – 68
