He also attacked her car with a chisel while she was sitting inside it
A shocked woman was left “absolutely terrified” – and her life was made a misery for months – after an obsessed stalker bombarded her with 222 telephone calls and attacked her car with a chisel while she was sitting inside it. Jason Hill also threatened to “beat her black and blue” and to stab a member of her family, Hull Crown Court heard.
Hill, 29, from Hull, but of no fixed address and recently in custody on remand, admitted an offence of stalking in Dodswell Grove, Hull, between July 1 and November 20 last year. He originally denied the matter but later changed his plea.
Stephen Welch, prosecuting, said that the woman was a neighbour of a man that Hill knew but there was no other connection between them. Hill would knock on her door in an attempt to get access to where the man was living.
He would bang on her door in the early hours of the morning. He managed to get her phone number and he rang her repeatedly even after she blocked him.
Hill made 222 calls to her between July and November. On November 14, he left a message threatening to “beat her black and blue” and he also threatened to stab another family member.
On August 6, Hill broke a window at the woman’s house and stabbed a tyre on her car. On November 19, he attacked her car with a chisel while she was sitting in it, causing her to drive off in panic.
The woman later said: “The whole incident has had a significant impact on my life. I still jump out of my skin when I hear noises outside, thinking it’s him.”
She was worried that Hill might come back and do it again. When she was out of the house, she was always on edge. “I can’t rest because of all this worrying,” she said.
“I am suffering from anxiety and depression because of all this. It has taken over my life. This has overtaken my life with worry and anxiety.
“This wasn’t just a case of an empty threat. He actually did it and might do it again.”
During police interview, Hill made virtually no comment. He had convictions for five previous offences, including making threats to kill in 2016 and breaching a restraining order, involving his father.
Connor Stuart, mitigating, said that Hill pleaded guilty after early denials. He acted impulsively after suffering problems but this was not an excuse for his behaviour. He had been in custody for about five months and his most recent offence was in 2023.
Judge John Thackray KC told Hill: “Quite why you targeted your victim in this case, probably we will never know. There is no good reason for behaving like that.
“You made her life a misery for many months. She must have been absolutely terrified. You should be thoroughly ashamed of your behaviour towards your victim, who deserved nothing of the sort.
“You phoned her 222 times, you attacked her car with a chisel while she was sitting in it. She says all of that has overtaken her life.
“They weren’t empty threats. You have had a significant impact on her life. She might never fully recover from the effects of your offending. It was over a long period.
“She has had to make substantial changes to her lifestyle. I am not satisfied that your risk can be managed in the community.
“I am not satisfied that you can be rehabilitated in the community. Only appropriate punishment can be achieved for this type of offending by way of an immediate custodial sentence.”
Hill was jailed for two years and he was given an indefinite restraining order.
