The German has taken his first steps back into football management more than a year on since leaving the MKM Stadium
Tim Walter is back in football 15 months on from his sacking by Hull City, and took charge of his first game in charge of Holstein Kiel on Saturday.
The German boss, who was dismissed by City owner Acun Ilicali in November 2024 after a tumultuous spell in charge which saw him last only 18 games, was appointed at the Bundesliga.2 side last week following the sacking of Marcel Rapp.
Walter is, of course, no stranger to Kiel, having had a 37-game spell there earlier in his management career before moving to VfB Stuttgart, Hamburg, and then the MKM Stadium.
His first outing in his second spell, Kiel saw the Storks earn a 1-1 draw at home against SV Elversberg to end a run of five straight league defeats, with them sitting 14th in the table.
“The first half was outstanding for me,” Walter mused after the game. “We gave it our all and showed emotion. That’s the only thing I can currently demand from the lads. I found their determination impressive. We want to build on this performance in the coming weeks.”

Walter has taken his former coach at City, Julian Hubner, with him to Northern Germany, and he admits he’s more mature on his return to his old club, following those stints with Hamburg and the Tigers.
“The club gave me the opportunity to establish myself in professional football back then, and I’m simply grateful to the club for that. I’d like to give something back, and that’s why I decided to do it (come back).
“My energy and my emotions on the pitch are unbroken. I love my teams and I try to give them everything, so that they are successful and I will continue to do everything for them. Over the years, you also become a bit more relaxed and mature.”
Walter admitted that bringing Hubner in with him was a key decision. “Jewel is my better half, not just my wife, but also Jewel. We’ve been through a lot, and he’s not only one of my best friends but also my daily advisor. He’s really my absolute supporter.”
