A six-part crime drama is full of dark comedy and will star Hayley Squires and Bel Powley.

The BBC has announced a new drama, Shy and Lola, featuring Hayley Squires from The Night Manager.

This thrilling six-part series is set to air on BBC One and iPlayer, with filming commencing in Hull and Leeds this spring. The storyline revolves around an unlikely pair in Shy’s small coastal town in the North of England.

Initially exploited as beginners, they soon discover their knack for crime, and a murder forces them into an alliance as they become entangled in the criminal underworld.

The series synopsis further reveals: “As they build an operation that threatens to blow the local bad guys out of the water, opposing futures beckon – using their earnings to fund a fresh start, or becoming the new bosses in town.”

Hayley Squires co-stars in the new drama, playing the role of Shy, a cleaner barely making ends meet whilst dreaming of a new life in Portugal, reports Leeds Live.

Bel Powley, known for her roles in A Small Light and Detour, portrays ex-model Lola, who comes to town with trouble following her. Additional casting for the new drama will be revealed in due time.

Alongside the announcement, screenwriter Amanda Coe expressed: “With such a rich and spiky central relationship at its core, Shy and Lola is a dream of a show to write, full of fun, action and emotion. I can’t wait to see our hugely exciting cast and director bring it to life.”

Rachelle Constant, Executive Producer for Clerkenwell Films, the production team behind Netflix’s Baby Reindeer and Sky’s The Death of Bunny Munro, commented: “Amanda has written a brilliantly bold series centred on a dynamic female duo, which blends dark comedy with propulsive storytelling.

“We’re thrilled to have Hayley and Bel as our leads, alongside an exceptional cast and crew.”

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, also hinted at the new drama, stating: “Shy and Lola are an unlikely duo, the classic odd couple, who get caught up in a murder – and that’s just the start of it.”
