The Tigers will hope to kick-start their promotion push this weekend

Cathal McCarthy says it’s important Hull City do not dwell on the heavy nature of their FA Cup defeat to Chelsea on Friday night, as focus shifts back to the promotion race.

City return to action against QPR on Saturday, looking to return to winning ways after two games in the league without victory prior to their home loss to Liam Rosenior’s Blues.

Sergej Jakirovic’s Tigers slipped to fifth in the Championship at the weekend after Millwall leapfrogged them with a come-from-behind victory at bottom side Sheffield Wednesday.

The teenager, who gave a good account of himself on Friday night, admits it was a tough examination, but gave a glimpse of what would lie in wait should City go on and win promotion.

“Tough, I suppose, not nice to concede four, but I thought we worked our socks off and we gave it a good effort,” the Irishman told Hull Live. “It wasn’t to be, but we tried hard, and we did our best, and it’s all you can ask.

“They’re World Champions for a reason. You could see they were quality all over the pitch. The long-term goal is, can we get into the play-offs and push for the Premier League? That might be the standard next season.

“It was a tough night, but collectively I thought we worked our socks off. There was a lot of energy on the pitch, and the fans helped with that. They were great, they just push us on and keep us going. Collectively, we had chances, and we had some positives we can take from the game, and we’ll bring that into Saturday.

“We’re not going to dwell on it; we’re going to move on. We have to work towards Saturday. That’s the goal: can we stay in those play-off spots, and can we be up there come the end of the season?
