So far, so good for Joe Batchelor at Hull FC.

Two games. Two wins. Two tries. It’s not been bad going for Joe Batchelor at Hull FC so far.

Fully fit again after battling through some injury issues at St Helens last year, the back rower is getting into his groove once more, and in starting both of Hull’s league and cup games on the right edge, he is already feeling at home.

Tasked to bring leadership and experience to the FC side, the 31-year-old knows the responsibility placed on his shoulders, but it’s one he’s relishing after swapping the Saints for the Black and Whites at the end of last year.

“You never quite know what you’re going to get until you come in, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far,” Batchelor told Hull Live. “It’s been different from what I’m used to, but that’s been good for me. It’s a refreshing change and I’m learning new things and new routines.

“I had a really good pre-season and I’ve enjoyed the work that has gone in. I know what I’m capable of and I’ve just got to keep proving it.

“Touch wood, I stay fully fit and healthy. I learnt last year not to put too much pressure on myself. I’ve got to look after my body and respect my body when it’s sore and look after it the right way. I’m enjoying my time here and I’m just really excited to show what I can do for Hull FC.”

And on leadership, with Batchelor winning every trophy on offer in the game at St Helens, the forward continued: “It’s probably part of the reason why I’ve been brought here, but it’s not something I’m trying to enforce.

“I can just see the quality of this group and the potential of this group. I just want to add what I can add to it, whether that be playing or giving little hints and tricks to the younger lads. I do enjoy being a leader but I’ve got to make sure my performances on the field allow me to be that.”

Taking two young back rowers under his wing in 2026, Batchelor is working with Will Kirby and Lennon Clark, who both touched down for tries in a strong showing for the club’s reserves side against London Broncos over the weekend.

“We’ve got a youthful group who are excitable and who want to learn and get better,” Batchelor added. “I’ve really enjoyed that aspect of it. There’s a couple of young lads in there, Will Kirby and Lennon Clark; they’ve shown really good glimpses in pre-season and they compete hard.

“They want to progress as well, and while we’re competing against each other, we want to help each other out as well. It’s good to have a good group of back rowers who want to improve and who can share bits and bobs with each other. Fingers crossed we can continue to help each other.”
