“I have enjoyed a variety of interactive apps including the Magic Piano, Spot the Difference and Jigsaws”

A care home in Bridlington has bought a sensory touch pad for its residents so they can play computer games and enjoy virtual adventures. Mallard Court residents have enjoyed exploring the different puzzles and even a virtual piano app.

This fully accessible device, which can be easily moved and enjoyed in residents’ own rooms, offers expert care for those with mobility restrictions and residents living with dementia.

The display lets users of all mobility levels enjoy sensory experiences without leaving their rooms. Users can interact with shapes, colours, and objects through simple gestures and movements.

Designed with dementia care in mind, the touch pad features a number of tools to promote relaxation and provide multi-sensory experiences.

Its 43” screen is large enough to allow residents with visual difficulties to participate in activities they would otherwise miss out on. The screen is ultra high definition 4k, offering rich visual detail so residents can take immersive ‘voyages’ anywhere in the world.

There are also a variety of dementia-friendly apps, including virtual piano and a 3D chess set. Large piece jigsaws and other virtual games are suitable for residents with mobility restrictions.

The games are rich in colour, movement, and detail, providing a safe and comfortable environment for people of all ages to play. The new addition has already proven popular, with residents, visitors, and staff at Mallard Court enjoying fun afternoons with the device.

Michelle Galtress, Deputy Manager at Mallard Court, said: “The impact that the touch pad has had in a short space of time has been incredible.

“Residents have shown absolute delight when playing the games. It has been a real joy to see the increased interaction from residents within our home with the screen and with each other.”

Resident Pamela said she had “really enjoyed” playing on the table with her husband Alan. She added: “I have enjoyed a variety of interactive apps including the Magic Piano, Spot the Difference and Jigsaws.”

Mallard Court care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers. It provides residential care and dementia care from respite care to long term stays.
