Sandsend beach offers peaceful golden sands, award-winning restaurants and coastal walks just minutes from Whitby
A hidden treasure along the Yorkshire coast boasts miles of pristine golden beaches and is encircled by ideal destinations for culinary enthusiasts.
Just over one hours’ drive away, Sandsend is eight minutes from the busy tourist destination of Whitby, yet its peaceful shoreline, free from throngs of visitors, feels worlds apart from the vibrant cultural centre located just three miles away, according to The Whitby Guide.
Situated between Teesside and Kingston upon Hull lies the charming village of Sandsend, tucked beneath the striking North York Moors.
Originally, Sandsend thrived primarily on tourism attracted by the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway during the national rail boom that saw the tourist trade flourish. Regrettably, its railway station shut its doors in 1958.
Nowadays, Sandsend’s tranquil beach reaches its full glory at low tide, with its abundance of rock pools and expanses of sand creating an ideal setting for family strolls and discovery, reports Yorkshire Live.
The Sandsend Trail offers a stunning walk that provides sweeping vistas of the ocean and neighbouring moors for those seeking a lengthier adventure.
For food enthusiasts, the conclusion of your ramble marks the start of your culinary journey, as excellent dining establishments surround Sandsend.
The village pub – The Hart Inn – remains a popular choice and serves superb, traditional pub fare. One reviewer said: “Four of us ate three courses here and everything was delicious. Both the fish and batter were cooked to perfection, the steak was tender and cooked exactly as requested, the lasagna was tasty and homemade.
“I can definitely recommend the seafood starter and monkfish bites. Finally the White chocolate cheesecake with Bailey cream finished the meal off perfectly. Oh and the staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely worth a visit.”
For those seeking something more refined, Estbek House boasts an impressive 4.5/5 rating on TripAdvisor, with a menu brimming with beautiful fresh seafood caught from the nearby waters. The Georgian building once served as offices for the alum mining industry before being transformed into this highly acclaimed restaurant.
One diner awarded their visit 5/5 on TripAdvisor, saying: “Great food and lovely service. Excellent recommendations for food from the menu…the cod and smoked haddock mornay in scallop shells was divine!”.
A short 10-minute drive from Sandsend beach brings you to Dunsley Hall, where the restaurant serves consistently excellent, straightforward dishes executed beautifully. Diners have also praised how well cared for they felt during their visit.
One guest gave the experience 5/5 on TripAdvisor, writing: “We started with quite low expectations. The menu was quite limited. What a lovely surprise! The bacon ribeye was great and the vegetables were perfect. At £45 for two this was excellent value too. The dining room lacks atmosphere but with food this good who cares!”.
