He said he had been ‘knocking around with the wrong people’ and ‘should have gone to college’

Police caught a young drug user selling crack cocaine and cocaine on the streets after he found himself “knocking around with the wrong people”. Jacob Scarah later branded himself an “idiot” but he now realised that he “should have just gone to college or something” to avoid getting into trouble, Hull Crown Court heard.

Scarah, 21, of Albert Avenue, of Anlaby Road, west Hull, admitted possessing cocaine and crack cocaine with intent to supply on December 10, 2024. He also admitted possessing cannabis.

Holly Thompson, prosecuting, said that police were on duty at 12.50pm when they saw Scarah riding a bicycle in the Waterloo Street and Goodrich Close area, off Beverley Road, Hull. He approached a group of suspected drug users and there was a hand-to-hand exchange before he rode off.

Scarah later cycled towards police on Beverley Road and, when they told him who they were, he tried to turn away to get away from them but failed. He was handcuffed and searched.

Two mobile phones, £45 cash, a cannabis grinder and a large number of white wraps of drugs were found. The street value of crack cocaine found was £1,480, with values of £840 for cocaine and £20 for cannabis, making a total of £2,340.

“He appears to have been a runner,” said Miss Thompson. “There was an expectation of significant financial advantage.” Scarah made no comment to questions during police interview.

He had convictions for seven previous offences between September 2023 and June last year. He was given a 20-month suspended sentence at the same court on June 2 for assault causing actual bodily harm.

Amber Hobson, mitigating, said that Scarah was incredibly immature at the time. He was homeless at the time and open to negative peers. “He describes himself as simply knocking around with the wrong people,” said Miss Hobson.

Scarah made bad choices but was very remorseful. “He is disgusted with himself,” said Miss Hobson. “He describes himself as an idiot and says that he should have just gone to college or something.

“He was misusing heroin, cocaine and cannabis at the time. He is now completely clean of all Class A substances and he is in the process of reducing his cannabis use and he has reduced it significantly.

“He was dealing drugs to fund his significant addiction. That was during his period of homelessness. He has made incredible progress with the probation order and he is looking for paid employment.”
