The Telford-born star is enjoying a major renaissance at the MKM Stadium
Ryan Giles has everything to be a roaring success this season, according to Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic, who has overseen a major transformation in the full-back.
A £4m signing last summer, Giles had endured a nightmare spell at the MKM Stadium following his move from Luton Town and was sent out on loan to former club Middlesbrough in the second half of last season.
At one point early in the summer, it looked like Giles would be moved on with the club looking at other options on the left side of defence, but Giles’ recovery has been one of the highlights of the season so far.
All five of his assists in the opening games of the season have created goals for in-form marksman Oli McBurnie, which has seen the 25-year-old ranked as one of the most potent attack-minded defenders in the Championship and the Scotland ace joking he could get his teammate an England call-up.
Giles has recaptured the form that saw him excel under Michael Carrick at Boro a couple of seasons ago, when he notched an impressive 12 assists for the Teesside outfit on their way to the play-offs, and Jakirovic’s answer for how it’s happened is one simple word. Trust.
“We’ve improved him again,” the City boss told Hull Live. “This is good for us. I think everything is done by trust. Trust when you’re speaking with someone, when you’re expecting something from someone, when you explain to him how I see him, what he needs to do on the pitch, this is trust, support, and that’s it.
“For this position, Gilo has everything,” the Croatian confessed. “He can repeat, he’s very fast, very technically good, good crossing, good delivery there. What he needs to improve is in the phase of defence, maybe to be better. He can be more powerful, stronger in challenges and duels, and that’s it, but he has everything.”
