Kayli O’Connell was shocked to discover the double glazing of her shop window had been smashed by a brick
A beauty salon owner ‘thanked’ a thug who smashed her shop window – transforming the wreckage into a spooky Halloween display ‘everyone loves’. Kayli O’Connell was shocked to discover the double glazing of her shop window had been smashed by a brick on October 5.
The ‘stressed’ 38-year-old says the damage is going to cost £2,000 to fix but, after noticing it resembled a ‘perfect spider’s web’, she decided to turn it into a spooky display. On TikTok Kyli shared footage of the display captioned ‘from having our salon window smashed to smashing into Halloween’, which has gone viral with more than 79,000 views. In the clip viewers can see the smashed glass transformed into a giant spider’s web as well as pumpkins, bats and spooky writing.
Now, Kyli says she feels ‘really happy’ with the display and hopes the vandal sees how she’s found ‘the best of a bad situation’. Kayli, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, said: “It was a massive shock. I’ve had that salon coming up to a year and we’ve never had any issues.
“A normal person doesn’t really do this. I didn’t know what goes through someone’s mind to do that. It’s very strange and it’s cruel behaviour. It’s cost a lot so that’s probably the thing that’s annoyed me the most.
“It was stressful. You start thinking, ‘Is it a target’? We don’t really know who it’s aimed for or if it’s just random and we’ll never know. It’s a double-glazed window and it’s gone through both sides of the glass.
“The rock was still left there like a kick in the teeth. Someone must’ve chucked it at the window and couldn’t be bothered to pick it up. It happened and I can’t change that. The repairs would need to be made to measure so it was just going to sit there for four weeks so I thought, ‘Well, it’d make a good Halloween window’.
“The smash is like a perfect spider’s web, that’s just me as a person and I have to find the opportunity in everything. I was really happy with it, it looks exactly how I wanted it to look. It’s making the best of a bad situation.
“I hope the person who did it walks past it all the time and if it’s done on purpose I hope they think, ‘Ugh, I can’t be bothered’.”
Kayli says she designed the display herself and hired someone to paint it using a virtual reality headset. “It’s payback and it’s teaching the person that did this a lesson. I don’t know what you gain out of behaviour like that other than purposely trying to ruin something that someone has.
“Just try and find the best out of the bad situation. No-one got hurt and nothing got taken, it’s replaceable. Everyone absolutely loves it. It’s timed so perfectly before Halloween so thank you to whoever did it.”
West Yorkshire Police has been contacted for comment.
