A carnival atmosphere was very much in the air at a Hull care home today (Friday, October 16).

As Hull Fair was primed for its penultimate date with the city for 2026, Elm Tree Court, at Preston Road, was also channelling the vibe of the hugely popular event. Staff bring the fairground experience into the home every year, giving residents the chance to enjoy some of the fun and nostalgia associated with one of Hull’s best-loved traditions.

The afternoon of activities drew its inspiration from traditional fairground games and entertainment, with staff hoping to bring back memories of residents’ own visits to Hull Fair over the years. Elm Tree Court said it was a chance for residents to enjoy a taste of Hull Fair without leaving the home, as well as to share memories of visiting the fair with family and friends over the years.

Among the “sideshows” were hook-a-duck, roll-a-penny and a fortune teller, with a soundtrack of traditional steam organ music playing. There were all the regular Hull Fair treats on offer as well, including brandysnap, donuts and popcorn – and there were prizes including “goldfish” (made of plastic), perfect for sparking memories.

Sarah Alexander, head of care at Elm Tree Court, said: “We always do this every year, the residents love it.

“I think the fair treats have nearly all gone. I think the residents have had a bit of a go on everything, depending on their abilities.

“There have been soft toys won and their popularity has gone beyond the afternoon. One lady won a clinging monkey and she’s got it around her neck and doesn’t want to take it off.”

Sarah added: “We do everything at Elm Tree Court. It’s absolutely fabulous with things going on all the time.

“There are Christmas markets and fairs, themed days, making pizzas and art classes. It makes things fun.”
