A violent and “irate” bully viciously attacked his ex-girlfriend before later making menacing threats and warning: “I’ll kill her before Sunday, I’ll go to jail for life. I’ll kill her – watch!”

Convicted sex offender Daniel Haldenby later tried to intimidate the woman into dropping out of any prosecution of him, Hull Crown Court heard. Haldenby, 32, of Kilburn Avenue, off Bridlington Avenue, Hull, admitted assaulting the woman, causing actual bodily harm, on July 18, 2024 and making threats to her new boyfriend that he would kill the woman. He also admitted intimidating her as a witness by sending text messages between July 18 and 23, 2024 and failing to comply with sex offender requirements on July 2, 2024.

Billy Torbett, prosecuting, said that Haldenby and the woman were previously in a relationship and had two children together but it ended in November 2023. He arrived at her home on July 18, 2024, and told her that he had a new girlfriend.

The woman made a comment to him about his past. “She then went into the kitchen and retrieved a sexual offender registration notification form and showed it to the defendant as he was sitting on the sofa in the living room,” said Mr Torbett.

“This caused him to become irate. He began to search through the property and kicked a hole in the wall before turning to her as she was recording him and telling him to leave the house. He lunged at her and took her to the floor.

“The defendant pinned her down and was on top of her. He grabbed her biceps and pulled her hair as well as biting her right forearm. She reports that this felt like it went on for four to five minutes.

“He allowed her to go free from his grip after she threatened to call the police. She did not call the police herself.”

Her sister and current boyfriend did so, however, as the woman had managed to start a group WhatsApp call with family members on her mobile phone. Haldenby texted her new boyfriend and told him: “Yes, and watch – I’ll kill her before Sunday, I’ll go to jail for life. I’ll kill her – watch!” He left the house when he became aware that the police might have been called. Police arrived at 12.50pm. Four days later, Haldenby and the woman were exchanging text messages on July 22, 2024.

“In those messages, he asks her to withdraw support for the prosecution before turning nasty and demanding she does so, otherwise he would go to social services, claiming he has ‘a lot on her’,” said Mr Torbett. Police arrested Haldenby on August 14, 2024 when responding to an unrelated incident and realising that he was circulated as wanted for the earlier offences.

The next day, he was further arrested for failing to comply with the requirements of his sexual offender’s registration. “He had failed to notify police of his change of address,” said Mr Torbett.

Haldenby had a conviction from Hull Crown Court on April 12, 2012 and he had to register as a sex offender indefinitely. Police had repeatedly tried to contact Haldenby after being told on April 8, 2024 that he would have a new address.

He did not register a different address until June 29, 2024. “He is therefore in breach of his requirement to register an address for that period,” said Mr Torbett.

Haldenby had convictions for 20 previous offences, between September 2009 and October 2018. They included assault causing actual bodily harm in April 2018, assault in July 2018 and making threats with a blade in public.

Haldenby, who had recently been on bail, was jailed for two years.
