Hull’s boxers will get an opportunity unlike none seen before outside of a Luke Campbell fight as streaming service DAZN arrives in the city on Friday night. That’s the view of former British champion turned promoter Curtis Woodhouse, who will open the doors at Connexin Live to the worldwide streaming giant for his latest fight promotion in the city.
Woodhouse’s 3156 Promotions put on their latest show at Connexin Live this Friday, with the September Showdown set to be broadcast live on DAZN, home to some of the world’s biggest fights, including the eagerly anticipated match-up this weekend between Ryan Garcia and Connor Benn.
The fight night in Hull is part of a huge weekend of sport on DAZN, with Hull’s own rising star Harry Powell getting an opportunity to showcase his talents to a huge audience when he takes on York’s Nathan Shepherd for the vacant Central Area middleweight title.
“DAZN have put their trust in us and said, ‘go show us what you can do’, so that’s what we intend to do,” Woodhouse told Hull Live.
“I’m grateful for this opportunity and it is an amazing platform for our boxers to shine. It’s put Hull in the shop window like we’ve never seen before outside of a Luke Campbell fight night. The eyes of the world will be on us and now it’s down to the fighters to perform.”
The September Showdown event is the latest in Hull to be put on by Woodhouse, who has a rapidly expanding stable of boxers, which includes Powell. The 25-year-old is dropping down the weight classes to fight at 160 pounds for this middleweight title opportunity having previously fought in and around light heavyweight or super middleweight.
Powell is not expecting the weight drop to be an issue, and neither is Woodhouse who says the fight is unlikely to last long. He added; “This is a great fight for Harry, a real test because Nathan is bringing an army from York and he fancies it. The atmosphere will be unreal.
“I don’t see it going on for too long because it’s going to be a shootout!!
Joining Powell on the card are fellow local boxers Louis West and Tom Watson, plus Marillious Kelly and Reece Gooch on debut, with the latter facing Beverley journeyman Harry Matthews as party of a 10-fight bill.
Limited tickets are still available from Connexin Live, with doors opening at 5pm Friday. The public weigh-in takes place at the arena at 11:30am on Thursday morning.
