Two women have been prosecuted for fly-tipping after their rubbish was illegally dumped in the East Riding. The women both pleaded guilty to the two separate offences and were ordered to pay a combined total of £494.
The cases of the women were heard at Beverley Magistrates’ Court last month after rubbish belonging to them was found abandoned. Both pleaded guilty in two separate cases to failing in their duty of care to legally dispose of their waste.
Sophie Smith, formerly of Jefferson Street, Goole, admitted failing in her duty of care after waste was dumped in the alley between Jefferson Street and Carter Street in the town on three occasions. She was fined £80 and ordered to pay £150 costs and a £32 victim surcharge – a total of £262.
The court heard that CCTV cameras recorded a person coming from Smith’s former address in Jefferson Street and then abandoning waste in the alley on 14 May, 20 May and 2 June last year.
Streetscene enforcement officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council found items dumped next to wheelie bins in the alley including two mattresses and a box. Smith was the liable party at the Jefferson Street address.
Elizabeth Walker, of Little Beck Road, Bridlington, admitted failing in her duty of care after household waste belonging to her was found dumped on the roadside in Woldgate on 9 March last year. She was fined £80 and was ordered to pay £120 costs and a £32 victim surcharge – a total of £232.
The court heard, when she was interviewed by streetscene enforcement officers from East Riding Of Yorkshire Council at an earlier date, Walker confirmed the waste had come from her address but said she had given it to someone else to dispose of.

Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, explained residents are always responsible for disposing of unwanted items and warned that householders are still liable if someone else fly-tips your rubbish – even if a householder has paid that person to get rid of the waste.
He said: “Dumping waste is never acceptable. We provide proper and legal ways of disposing of it. Even if you give it to someone else to dispose of it, you are responsible for your own rubbish, and if it gets abandoned, we will take action where we can.”
There are severe punishments for fly-tipping. Anyone caught fly-tipping in the East Riding could be ordered to pay a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 or the case could be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment. And any vehicles used in connection with the fly-tipping of waste can be seized and destroyed.
