Hull diners ‘so pleased to see it feeling alive again’

An independent restaurant and bar in Hull’s Fruit Market is coming up to its first anniversary under new ownership and delighted that diners are rediscovering the venue. Butler Whites, in Humber Street, was acquired by Darren on November 1 last year.

The restaurant is marking the milestone with the launch of a new autumn menu, from Thursday, September 3, alongside Steak Night, Sunday roasts, festive bookings and New Year’s Eve plans. This summer has seen customers renewing their acquaintance with Butler Whites, which is run by Darren, his partner Laura, and their team.

Their ambition was to bring fresh energy to one of Humber Street’s most recognisable restaurant spaces, creating a relaxed but special place for date nights, birthdays, family meals, celebrations, drinks with friends and private events. The past few months have seen guests making the most of the restaurant’s outdoor space, with the team particularly encouraged by customers returning after time away.

Darren said: “We have had people come in and say they used to visit Butler Whites all the time, and that they are so pleased to see it feeling alive again. That has meant a huge amount to us.

“The building is beautiful and it has always had real potential. We wanted to create somewhere people could come for great food, great drinks and a really good atmosphere – whether it is a date night, a celebration, Sunday lunch or just drinks with friends.”

After a year of listening to customers, refining the offer and building a team, Butler Whites says it has found its sweet spot: generous, approachable food in a setting that feels like a treat without being formal or intimidating. Laura said it had been “a really encouraging summer” and that they had been working to bring “fresh energy to the venue”.

The new autumn menu will feature seasonal dishes, steaks, seafood, vegetarian and vegan choices, and eight new stone-baked pizzas. The menu includes comfort-food favourites such as steak, ale and Stilton pie alongside dishes including pan-fried halibut, confit duck and wild mushroom stroganoff.

Thursday Steak Night is now a regular feature, running alongside the main evening menu. Guests can select from cuts including sirloin, ribeye, fillet, slow-cooked short rib and sharing chateaubriand, with a drink included.

Sunday roasts are another key part of the Butler Whites offering, with roast beef, lamb, chicken, 24-hour braised pork belly and a vegetarian option, each served with Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and gravy. The venue also hosts weddings, parties and corporate events.

A new cocktail and drinks menu is due to launch in the coming months, including new draught products. Christmas celebrations are already available to book, while plans are under way for a New Year’s Eve party.

Darren said: “We have found our feet. We are proud of the team we have built and we are genuinely excited about the next few months.
