The Tigers claimed their first ever Premier League win over United

Hull City started the Premier League season in some style by recording their first-ever top-flight victory over Manchester United, with a deserved 2-0 success in front of a raucous MKM Stadium crowd.
City were a goal in front after 17 minutes when Senne Lammens could only divert Oli McBurnie’s shot into the path of Semi Ajayi to thump into the roof of the net. The MKM Stadium erupted. Sergej Jakirovic’s men were good value, and could have had a goal before that opener, but they did get the second their play deserved when Regan Slater’s free-kick was headed in by Nobel Mendy on his debut.
The Tigers were deservedly 2-0 in front at the break and then defended superbly in the second half, to keep out United and start their season in the best possible fashion.

United had a lot of the ball early on, which was to be expected but it was the Tigers who fashioned an opening when Lewie Coyle surged down the right, before crossing looking for McBurnie, who was beaten to it well by Noussair Mazraoui at the back post. Tzolakis beat away Mbeumo’s shot before Giles crossed for McBurnie who forced a fine save from Senne Lammens.
The roof came off the MKM Stadium when Ajayi powered in the opener, after McBurnie’s shot was parried into his path, and the Tigers were in dreamland when Nobel Mendy headed in Regan Slater’s free-kick 38 minutes in to double their lead.
Mendy was forced off just after the hour which was a sad end to what had been a superb debut, and he was followed by Ajayi, who was also limping. With little drama in the closing stages, Sergej Jakirovic ended a run of 10 games in the Premier League without victory over the 13-time winners.

- Marcus Rashford replaces the booked Patrick Dorgu at half-time for United
- Lucas Herrington comes on for his debut just past the hour in place of the injured Nobel Mendy, and former United man Paddy McNair replaced Ajayi
- Lewie Coyle was forced off and replaced by fit-again Cody Drameh, while Liam Millar came on for Stroud
- Benjamin Sesko and Kobbie Mainoo were introduced in the second half
- Away fans taunted as the 15:03 and 17:03 trains from Hull Paragon back to Manchester are cancelled
- Shea Lacey and Diogo Dalot on for Mazraoui and Cunha in the final 10 minutes before Matt Targett replaces Ryan Giles for his debut
- Millar booked in added time for diving as City hold on for a famous victory and start their season in the best possible fashion
