Global campaign raises awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding

The East Riding Infant Feeding Team from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust will be celebrating World Breastfeeding Week with a series of events for families this coming week. World Breastfeeding Week is a global campaign designed to help raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.
In partnership with East Riding Council and their Best Start Family Hubs (previously children’s centres), the integrated specialist public health nursing (ISPHNS) team will be running community drop-in events to celebrate breastfeeding and help raise awareness of the support available to residents.
Support provided to families through the East Riding Infant Feeding Service has already resulted in improved breastfeeding rates across the county over the past seven years. Rates at ten days have increased from 56 per cent to 64 per cent; rates at six to eight weeks increased from 44 per cent to 53 per cent, and exclusive breastfeeding at six to eight weeks increased from 35 per cent to 41 per cent.
The East Riding Infant Feeding Team have recently been awarded UNICEF UK Gold Baby Friendly for the seventh consecutive year. Events for World Breastfeeding Week are being held at locations across East Yorkshire and include:
- Monday, August 3 – West Park, Goole, from 1.15pm to 2.45pm
- Monday, August 3 – Bridlington Butts Close Best Start Family Hub, from 1.15pm to 3pm
- Monday, August 3 – Anlaby Family Hub, from 10am to 11:30am
- Tuesday, August 4 – Cottingham Family Hub, from 10am to 11:30am
- Tuesday, August 4 – Withernsea Lighthouse, from 10am to 11.30am
- Wednesday, August 5 – Brough Family Hub, from 10am to 11:30am
- Thursday, August 6 – Hexagon Centre, Beverley, on the grassed area (parents and carers are welcome to bring a picnic), from 11.30am to 1pm
- Thursday, August 6 – Market Weighton Best Start Family Hub, from 3.30pm to 4.30pm
