The decision to “thin out” her wardrobe by a woman from the Beverley area has resulted in a spectacular array of designer clothing and accessories by some of the greatest names in fashion going to auction. The entire sale, made up of 66 lots, is a private single-owner collection.
It is being auctioned on behalf of the fashion enthusiast for whom the bulk of the items had never been worn. The collection – handbags, outerwear, shoes, scarves, purses, sunglasses and accessories by Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Christian, Valentino and the rest – is predicted to make as much as £40,000.
The 20 designer handbags alone are expected to make between £12,000 and £20,000. They have all been given pre-sale estimates of hundreds of pounds and eight of them are expected to top a thousand.
Auctioneer Coralie Thomson said: “It is an absolutely stunning luxury fashion auction. Ninety per cent of the items have never been worn because the vendor – who has an even bigger collection – simply never got round to them.
“All the pieces remain in absolutely immaculate condition. It’s a unique event, in my experience, and it has created enormous interest.
“We’ve been fielding enquiries from all over the country.” The auction takes place at Duggleby Stephenson Saleroom, York Auction Centre, on Friday, July 17.
Coralie said: “The star of the show is undoubtedly going to be a Chanel 19 medium flap bag, a handbag that has been described as one of the most coveted bags in the fashion world. It was the last creation of Karl Lagerfeld, making its debut in Chanel’s 2019 Autumn Ready to Wear Collection, several months after the great designer’s death.
“The name references both Coco Chanel’s birthday (August 19) and the year in which the bag was launched. The 19 that we’ll be putting under the hammer is cream quilted lambskin leather with a mixed gold, silver and ruthenium-tone chain strap and, of course, has the signature CC monogram turn-lock fastening.
“It is unused, has its original dust bag and box – and is predicted to go for £3,500-£5,000. Other handbags in the sale include both the red and beige versions of Louis Vuitton’s Twist Moyene Modele (medium size) bags introduced in Nicholas Ghesquière’s 2015 Cruise Collection.
“The pre-sale estimates for those are £1,000-£1,500. Meanwhile, Vuitton’s now iconic City Steamer MM Night Lights limited edition tote bag, introduced for the Summer 2017 collection, is expected to make £1,200-£2,000.”
Elsewhere the catalogue ranges over elegant silk scarves, luxury leather accessories, designer sunglasses (from Chanel, Gucci and Bulgari to Burberry McQueen and Vuitton) as well as a wardrobe of coats, shoes and boots from leading French and Italian fashion houses. Coralie said: “It has been a brilliant auction to work on – wonderful to see the fantastic skill and artistry of some of the greatest fashion designers in the world. I’ve absolutely loved it.”
The extensively illustrated catalogue is available on the firm’s website, davidduggleby.com. Viewing sessions are at the saleroom, Tuesday to Thursday, July 14 to 16, 9.30am to 4.30pm and on the morning of Friday, July 17, from 9am until the online automated timed auction gets under way at 11am.
