Pollards Plaice and Cave Street Fisheries have both been recognised at the English Fish and Chip Awards

It’s not just the national football team that is hoping to bring it home for England this year. Two Hull fish and chip shops have received accolades in The Chippy Tour awards for their hard work, skill and consistency.
Pollards Plaice on Holderness Road was named Best Fish Fryer of the Year, while Cave Street Fisheries was named City Centre Shop of the Year. Pollards Plaice will now represent England at an England v Scotland fry-off during the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards in Glasgow later this year.
Steve Peel, creator of The Chippy Tour, was one of three judges at this year’s English Fish and Chip Awards, joining Danny vs Food and celebrity chef Aldo Zilli to help recognise some of the industry’s leading businesses. Following the awards, Steve visited Pollard’s Plaice in Hull to congratulate the winner of Best Fish Fryer of the Year 2026. During the visit, he spoke with the team and tried the haddock, which impressed the judges with its crisp, secret-batter coating and succulent, flaky fish.
Hull had further reason to celebrate after Cave Street Fisheries was named City Centre Chip Shop of the Year 2026. Steve, who has visited and reviewed more than 250 fish and chip shops around the country through The Chippy Tour, said: “It was a real privilege to be involved in judging the awards alongside Danny and Aldo. The standard was incredibly high, and it was brilliant to see Hull represented so strongly. Pollard’s Plaice and Cave Street Fisheries should both be very proud. These awards recognise the hard work, skill and consistency that go into producing great fish and chips every day.”
Pollard’s Plaice will represent England at an England v Scotland Fry Off during the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards in Glasgow. The awards take place on Monday, 9 November in Glasgow. Scottish finalists will first compete for their individual Scottish title, before Pollard’s Plaice cooks and presents its entry to the judges.
Pollard’s scorecard will then be compared with the highest Scottish scorecard to decide the England v Scotland Fry Off winner. The Pollard’s team will also receive accommodation and two tickets to the gala awards dinner. The English Fish and Chip Awards, which is free to enter, brought together shops, suppliers and industry figures from across the country to celebrate the people helping keep one of Britain’s best-loved traditions thriving.
