A Hull institution looks to have closed its doors after being a firm-favourite since 1962. The Coffee House, on Brook Street opposite Prospect Centre, has not opened for more than a week and is now listed as “permanently closed” on Google.
The apparent loss of the cafe has prompted some strong memories from locals, one of whom described it as an “institution” and “the place to be seen and go”. The Coffee House was independently owned and in the same spot for more than 50 years. It claimed to serve “the best coffee in Hull”. Its latest menu featured English breakfasts – including a “super value” full English – and lunch favourites like steak pie, haddock and chips and jacket potatoes.
Locals looked on in dismay as the cafe’s closed sign remained up throughout last week. In 2023, the Hull Live reported that the business was up for sale as the owners – who’d had the business for 30 years – were looking to retire. The property was being marketed by Ernest Wilson and Co, after the owners “reluctantly” decided to sell up. The well-known venue had been on the same site since 1962.
The premises, which had seating for 60 customers, was being sold as a going concern at £49,950. It was later listed for £25,000. The Rightmove listing described the business as “very busy”. It was listed as a retirement sale and was described as being in a bustling shopping centre location.
