Hull City are plotting a move for DR Congo defender Axel Tuanzebe, with the international available on a free transfer after leaving relegated Burnley earlier this week when his contract expired.
The 28-year-old former Manchester United academy graduate impressed in the World Cup on Wednesday evening, playing well in defeat against an England team that needed a late Harry Kane brace to progress to the last 16 in Atlanta.
Tuanzebe only joined the Clarets a year ago, following Ipswich Town’s relegation and played 16 times for the Turf Moor club, but missed a chunk of the season with an Achilles injury before returning at the back end of the campaign.
An experienced central defender, who is also capable of playing at right-back, the Bunia-born performer played 37 times for United earlier in his career, as well as notching 46 appearances for Aston Villa, and 44 for the Tractor Boys. So far, Tuanzebe has played 64 times in the Premier League.

Despite playing for England at Under-19, 20 and 21 levels, Tuanzebe opted to play for the country of his birth two years ago, helping the Congo qualify for this summer’s tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
He played in all four of DR Congo’s games at the World Cup, and would represent a solid piece of business for the newly-promoted Tigers as they look to bolster their defensive ranks.
City are desperate to strengthen all areas of their team, especially defensively, having allowed Akin Famewo to join Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, City have been linked with a move for Ghana defender Jerome Opoku, who plies his trade in Turkey with Istanbul Basaksehir. The London-born 27-year-old is away at the World Cup, playing twice so far, and is attracting interest from a host of clubs, with the Tigers reportedly keen.
