Andy Last has confirmed that Hull FC winger Harvey Barron failed his HIA during Saturday’s defeat to Wigan Warriors, automatically ruling him out of the Magic Weekend derby against Hull KR on July 4.
Barron suffered the blow in the first half of the 20-16 loss, with his head hitting the MKM Stadium turf after a tackle from Wigan forward Junior Nsemba.
The player will now go through his return-to-play protocols before a hoped return against York Knights the following week.
“He’s a Category 1 so he won’t play next week,” Last confirmed after the game. “It was a tough contact. They aimed up on Harvey. They went after him.
“It wasn’t a head slam, but it was a strong contact where Harvey couldn’t protect his fall, and his head bounced off the surface. He’s a Category 1 because he couldn’t move, so we’ve lost one there definitely.”
Elsewhere, Hugo Salabio and Joe Batchelor both went off in the first half for HIAs, but both forwards passed their assessments before returning to the field.
Jed Cartwright and Lewis Martin also came through the game unscathed. Martin was making his comeback from an ankle layoff, and Cartwright started the game after failing to finish the Wakefield Trinity match last week after his hamstring tightened up.
Asked by Hull Live who could be returning to his derby line-up next week, with Hull going up against Hull KR at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, Last stated that James Bell and Cade Cust have got a chance alongside Ethan O’Neill, who has a hamstring issue and was confirmed pre-match to be within a shot.
Meanwhile, Bell has missed the last month with a knee issue sustained in training and Cust the last three games with a shoulder problem that required a clean out after the Warrington match.
“Belly was close this week,” Last added. “He had a good couple of sessions, but just wasn’t quite 100% confident in himself to perform at the level at which he expects of himself and the level we expect of him. He’ll be better for another week practice and he’ll come into consideration for selection for the derby.
“Cade also comes into consideration. He is someone who is very versatile. He can play six, seven, and 13, and he’s also a very good nine. What I like about Cade is that he’s got that dog mentality in him. He goes after contacts and he’s very competitive. We’ll have a good look at Cade and hopefully he comes through and is available for selection.”
On the injury front, Hull also remain without Will Pryce (ACL), John Asiata (hamstring), Sam Lisone (pec), Ligi Sao (shoulder), Connor Bailey (collarbone), Arthur Romano (ankle), Brad Fash (knee), Will Kirby (ACL), and Joe Ward (ACL). Yusuf Aydin and Roman Dawson are suspended and will be available for the York game.
