Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said ‘it could have been much worse’

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service have highlighted a recent incident as a warning to others in the community.
In the incident, sunlight reflected off a mirror and set a chair cushion alight. Thankfully, the occupier – who shared their story and image to help raise awareness – acted quickly to stop the fire from spreading.
As Hull basks in warmer temperatures this week, Humberside Fire and Rescue are urging people to check their homes for items left in direct sunlight. This includes glasses, mirrors, crystal or glass ornaments and aerosol cans (including deodorants).
This is because glass and crystal can act like a magnifying glass, the fire service said, which means sunlight can be focused onto flammable materials like curtains, bedding or furniture. Aerosols can overheat and may rupture or explode.
People are being advised to keep their windowsills clear, move reflective items out of direct sun and close curtains or blinds during the day to keep houses cool.
An amber warning for extreme heat is currently in force across parts of East Yorkshire. The area affected covers west of of Hull, surrounding Goole and Snaith. In Hull, the Met Office is predicting temperatures will reach highs of 23C today, and 29C on both Friday and Saturday.
