Hull City Council has launched a six-week public consultation on proposed safety improvements to the junctions at Bellfield Avenue and Summergangs Road on Holderness Road.

Two Holderness Road junctions will be put under the microscope at a public consultation as Hull City Council aims to improve safety for people that use them. The council launched a six-week public engagement exercise in a bid to make the Bellfield Avenue and Summerhangs Road junctions safer.
The consultation, which began on Monday, June 22, gives people the chance to see the proposed changes and have their say. The improvements form part of the council’s Safer Roads Fund programme, following a successful bid to the Department for Transport. Initiatives delivered through the Safer Roads Fund aim to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the road network.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “The enhancements being proposed for these junctions will not only help us improve safety, but they will also have wider benefits for all those using the highway network in the Holderness Road area, whatever mode of transport they choose. The public engagement exercise provides the opportunity for residents, local business users, motorists and members of the travelling public to let us know their thoughts, so that we can refine our plans.”
There are several proposed changes to the Holderness Road junction at Bellfield Avenue. These include:
- new traffic signals, including advanced stop lines for people cycling
- alterations to the central reservation of Holderness Road to allow right turn provision for vehicles entering Bellfield Avenue from Holderness Road
- removal of on-street parking between 954, 956 and 958 Holderness Road
- upgrades to the existing pedestrian crossing to make a pelican crossing (push button demand) on all arms of the junction and the removal of guard railing
- tactile paving to assist those with a visual impairment
- removal of a single tree on the central reservation, to make way for the right turn provision
- potentially the removal of another tree outside 950 Holderness Road to make way for the upgraded pelican crossing
- continuation of cycle lanes along Holderness Road
- upgraded road markings and signage
- resurfacing works, where required.
There are also several proposed changes to the Holderness Road junction at Summergangs Road. These include:
- new traffic signals on Holderness Road and Summergangs Road
- removal of the central island on Holderness Road to improve turning movements from both Holderness Road and Summergangs Road
- repositioning the existing pelican crossing on Holderness Road, on the eastern side, to ensure a more direct route for pedestrians and removal of all guard railing
- installation of a new pelican crossing (push button demand) on Holderness Road to the west of the junction and on Summergangs Road as well as removal of all guard railing
- tactile paving to assist visually impaired users to cross Holderness Road and Summergangs Road
- tactile paving across access into Hull Angling Centre
- continuation of cycle lanes along Holderness Road
- upgraded road markings and signage
- resurfacing works, where required.

The council will also be hosting two public drop-in sessions on Wednesday, July 8 at Woodford Leisure Centre from 2pm to 7pm, and at Ings Library from 10am to 1pm. There will be another in-person consultation session at Woodford Leisure Centre on Thursday July 9 from 10am to 7pm.
The public engagement exercise will run until Monday, August 3.
