Former Hull FC man Kane Evans has returned to Sydney Roosters in a coaching role, it has been revealed.
Evans recently opened up on his battles with addiction, alcohol and depression while struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. The former prop has also had periods of homelessness, but he’s sober now and comfortable with where he’s at after coming out publicly.
And, in an effort to help one of their former players, the Roosters have offered the 34-year-old a coaching role.
Evans has been appointed in an assistant coaching role with the club’s New South Wales Cup side and it is hoped that the role and the structure can help as he strives to rebuild his life.
It comes with the Sydney Morning Herald also claiming homophobic slurs were directed towards Evans while he had been working in scaffolding.
He has now joined Brett Morris’ coaching team at the Roosters then and club owner Nick Politis has spoken out about the decision to bring him back.
“It’s only a small role, we’re trying to help him find a proper job out there,” Politis told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“I saw him the other day at training wearing all the gear. He loves it, he was glad to feel a part of something again, and it was nice to see him back.”
The report goes on to add that Evans could make a playing return before the end of the season with Glebe Dirty Reds in the Ron Massey Cup.
Evans started his career with the Roosters, making 74 appearances for the club between the 2014 and 2017 seasons.
He went on to join Parramatta Eels and New Zealand Warriors before making the move over to Hull FC for the start of the 2022 season.
He made 23 outings for Hull before being released in May 2023.
