Businesses and organisations are being invited to help shape Hull’s low-carbon future. Hull City Council is seeking responses from potential suppliers of waste or surplus heat to the Hull District Heat Network (HDHN).
The major city centre project seeks to provide Hull with heat generated by utilising waste energy. A network of underground pipes will transport hot water throughout the city.
The network will save an estimated 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over 40 years. A number of UK cities, such as London, Glasgow, and Manchester already have similar systems in place.
The HDHN will include a new energy centre next to Napoleons Casino & Restaurant. The site, which is currently under construction, will be the centrepiece of the network, supplying the hot water.
The council says the network will deliver low-carbon heat to the city centre, serving both public and private buildings, as well as business and residential accommodation. An engagement process has been established through which the council is looking to gather initial market interest from any potential contributors with access to surplus or recoverable heat, as well as understand the range of available heat sources they could supply.
The questionnaire explores areas such as:
- The type and scale of heat that organisations could supply
- Technical and commercial considerations
- Timescales for potential involvement
- Insights into business operations

Cllr Charles Quinn, the council’s cabinet portfolio holder for environment, said: “Developing the Hull Heat Network is another major step in the city’s sustainability and green economy ambitions. We know that local businesses can play a vital role and we’re keen to hear from organisations who can help supply surplus or waste heat.
“This early engagement will allow us to understand what’s possible and ensure we design a network that works for both customers and partners.”
Organisations interested in participating are encouraged to complete the questionnaire before the closing date on Friday 3 July.
