The City left-back has enjoyed a terrific season after coming back in from the cold

Ryan Giles’ impressive redemption act is now complete after Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League at Wembley Stadium, courtesy of victory over his old club.
Giles‘ career at the MKM Stadium looked to be over last season, when Ruben Selles sanctioned his departure back to Middlesbrough in January 2025.
City had planned to let him go permanently last summer, in a desperate bid to try and recoup some of the £4m they paid Luton Town to sign him during Liam Rosenior’s tenure at the club.
By his own admission, Giles’ spell at City had been underwhelming prior to the arrival of Sergej Jakirovic, and a parting of ways seemed the best outcome.
Jakirovic was keen to understand why one of the Championship’s best attacking full-backs had almost been consigned to the scrap heap, but very quickly, the Croatian realised there was a potent, dangerous player in his squad that he could get the best out of, and since that moment out in Turkey last summer, the 26-year-old hasn’t looked back.

In the early weeks of the season, Giles’ crosses for Oli McBurnie were becoming City’s cheat card, before the Tigers were robbed of his services after suffering his first-ever hamstring injury in the first couple of minutes of his return to Teesside in late December.
Giles was out for a period before coming back and suffering the same injury in the opposite leg in another crucial victory, this time over Derby County, and while the second half of the season was not as productive as the first because of injury, his impact cannot be underestimated.
“On a personal note for me, this is everything I could have dreamed of,” the Telford-born ace told Hull Live. “It was tough for me. I actually came into last summer not knowing what the hell was going to happen.
“The fans were disappointed, and I completely got it. Like I’ve said before, though, I fully understood it. The club’s signed me for a lot of money, and it’s not worked out. There’s different reasons behind it. I have my opinions, but I don’t need to go into that. It is what it is now, but I just needed a manager, I think that just would give me that opportunity and let me do what I’m good at.
“I’ve had that with the gaffer this year, and on top of all the lads, everybody, to be fair and the fans, it’s been fantastic. I’ve not been able to do it on my own, of course, I needed a brilliant group of lads behind me, but I’m just really happy, and I thank everyone for sticking by me because I can appreciate from an outsider, you can probably write him off. That’s it, he needs to go, and although people have had their critics and I completely understood it, I’m just really happy I’ve been able to contribute this season and get this club back into the Premier League. It’s a real special feeling for me, so I’m really happy.”
Whichever player you speak to, the message remains the same when it comes to the camaraderie and spirit within the dressing room.
Put simply, City don’t survive what they have done this season without it being a tight-knit group, and one willing to back each other in the trenches, though he rightly credits his colleagues as being in a damn good team because you don’t win promotion in that manner unless you’re exactly that.
I’m overwhelmed,” he continued. “Everyone’s written us off this year, and we’ve just gone about our business. We deserve it, we absolutely deserve it. I just think we’ve got a group of men in the dressing room, great togetherness, and it’s very obvious the spirit togetherness is off the charts really.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been in a dressing room like it, and I’ve been in a few, which is a cliché to say, but I have, I’ve been in a few dressing rooms. The togetherness we’ve got in there is something special, and I really felt it on top of the experience, spirit, togetherness, and quality. We’re a good team.”
