Specsavers is celebrating the Robins’ place in the final with ‘fun and memorable’ initiatives
A local optician’s is celebrating Hull Kingston Rovers reaching the Challenge Cup final by offering free tests to anyone named Michael Lewis. As part of its two-year partnership with Hull KR, Specsavers Hull is inviting all Michael Lewises to visit any of its three Hull stores this week to claim a free sight test.
They will also receive a free OCT scan, free contact lens check and free ear wax check, alongside 75 per cent off glasses purchases. The campaign celebrates Hull KR fan favourite Mikey Lewis ahead of the club’s game against Wigan Warriors on Saturday (May 30).
David Proudfoot, store director at Specsavers Hull, said: “Our partnership with Hull KR has been all about celebrating the club, its supporters and the local community, so we wanted to do something fun and memorable ahead of such a huge occasion for the team. The club has had an incredible season, so we thought it would be a brilliant way to mark the Challenge Cup final.”
Laura George, chief operating officer at Hull KR, said: “‘It’s fantastic to see our partnership with Specsavers Hull continuing to engage supporters and the wider community in creative ways. The Challenge Cup final is a massive moment for everyone connected with the club, and this is a fun way to celebrate the excitement around the occasion while recognising Mikey’s contribution both on and off the field.”
To redeem the offer, customers named Michael Lewis must present ID in store up until Friday, May 29, across the three local stores – Jameson Street, Hull; Althorp Road, Kingswood Retail Park; King Street, Cottingham.
At the same time, Specsavers and Hull KR are running a competition in support of Hull Samaritans. The optician’s is hosting a “spot the ball” competition across the three stores, giving people the chance to win two VIP hospitality tickets to the Challenge Cup final.
The competition will challenge people to get closest to the rugby ball in a photograph after the ball has been removed. Entrants will be asked to donate to take part, with all money raised going directly to Hull Samaritans; people who take second and third place will win a signed Hull KR shirt or a signed rugby ball.
Mr Proudfoot said: “We’re incredibly proud to be supporting Hull Samaritans and the amazing work their volunteers do within our community. The competition is a fun way to bring people together, celebrate our partnership with Hull KR and the club reaching the Challenge Cup final, while raising money for an important cause.”
As part of the celebrations, Specsavers will also be auctioning life-size, signed Vegas-themed player cards featuring members of the Hull KR squad, giving supporters the chance to own a piece of club memorabilia while supporting the partnership’s community initiatives. The fundraising initiative forms part of Samaritans’ celebrations, marking 70 years since the charity was founded.
Rob Carlisle, a spokesperson for Hull Samaritans, said: “This year marks 65 years of Samaritans being there for people when they need someone to listen, and community support like this plays a huge role in helping us continue that work. We’re incredibly grateful to Specsavers Hull and Hull KR for supporting our anniversary fundraising efforts.
“Every donation made through the competition and auction will help ensure our volunteers can continue providing emotional support to those who need it most.”
