Two exisitng buildings will be repurposed
Plans for two agricultural buildings to be turned into a yoga, Pilates, and padel facility have been approved by East Riding Council. The facility is set to be established north of Bainton, near Driffield.
The now approved application came from Beacon Farm in the East Riding. The site is accessed from the A614, near its roundabout with the B1248. Plans say the project “represents a modest and sustainable farm diversification initiative that seeks to maximise the use of existing agricultural buildings within the established farmstead.”
Padel
The project involves converting two existing agricultural buildings on the site. One of the two is set to accommodate two padel courts.
The tennis-like racquet sport, which also incorporates elements of squash, has been growing in popularity locally, nationally, and internationally in recent years. Having originated in Mexico, padel is the “fastest growing sport in the world”, according to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
Plans explain: “A modest lean-to extension is proposed to the padel court building for ease of access and for use as a shower and changing area.”

Pilates & yoga studio
The second building will be repurposed as a Pilates and yoga studio. The NHS website describes Pilates as “a form of exercise that focuses on balance, posture, strength and flexibility. It’s suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.” The practice was developed by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer, during the First World War.
Plans submitted to the council say: “Both buildings are structurally sound and suitable for reuse without the need for demolition, major extension, or substantive external alteration. Extensive areas of existing hardstanding are present within the yard and will be utilised for vehicle circulation and parking associated with the proposed development. No encroachment into open agricultural land is required.”
