Firefighters were called to the scene on Tuesday evening as flames tore through the building near the Promenade

Police are investigating suspected arson at an unoccupied hotel in Bridlington after a huge blaze. Firefighters were called to the former Balmoral Hotel at around 9.30pm on Tuesday.

Properties close to the derelict building in Fort Terrace were evacuated while the blaze was extinguished. Flames and heavy smoke were seen in the area with a cordon put in place, including parts of the Promenade.

Nearby residents were being urged to keep their windows and doors closed by Humberside Fire & Rescue Service while people were asked to avoid the area as firefighters tackled the blaze. Humberside Police have since issued a statement saying they have been “working closely with partners to minimise the disruption caused”.

It is the second fire at the former hotel in the past five months with it being the scene of a similar incident in December. The hotel has been closed since 2019.

This after, a Humberside Police spokesperson said: “Officers are investigating a reported arson following a fire inside an unoccupied hotel on Fort Terrace in Bridlington at around 9.30pm yesterday evening (Tuesday, April 28).

“Neighbouring properties were evacuated to ensure the safety of residents and a cordon was put in place whilst the fire was extinguished. A small number of residents are still affected by the cordon, and we are working closely with partners to minimise the disruption caused.

“Extensive enquires remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. At this time, we have not received any reports of injuries sustained as a result of the fire, and officers remain in the area conducting lines of enquiry to identify those involved.

“Road closures were in place to allow emergency services to work safely, and we can confirm these have now been lifted.
