They could replace existing tennis courts

Plans have been submitted to East Riding Of Yorkshire Council seeking permission to convert existing tennis courts in Beverley into padel courts. If plans are approved, two of the tennis courts at Norwood Recreation Park would be changed.

The park currently has five lawn tennis courts and two tarmac tennis courts. The application proposes converting two of the lawn courts into three covered padel courts.

Padel, which is described by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) as “the fastest growing sport in the world,” is a racquet sport played on a court roughly half the size of a standard tennis court. The sport takes elements from both tennis and squash and is played on a court enclosed by mesh and glass walls.

Having originated in Mexico in the late 1960s, the sport has taken the world by storm in recent years. In the past two years, several padel court-related planning applications have been submitted to both East Riding Council and Hull City Council, showing the game’s popularity has reached East Yorkshire.

Plans submitted to the council say “the intention is to build best in class facilities for the region, giving Beverley a professional establishment for the community to play padel”. Plans go on to say that, while tennis “is seeing a decline in participation, and is seen as a harder sport to play,” the padel courts could “bring new eyes to the club”.

Plans suggest the existing tennis courts at the park are “underused.” It is also explained that the lawn courts are seasonal, meaning the introduction of padel courts would mean more of the site can be used all year.

It is also said the “application has been submitted following discussion with the various sport clubs at Norwood Park including the tennis club”.
