Another high-profile name has entered the open market.

Michael Ennis has become the latest coaching departure from St George Illawarra Dragons following a brief stint as the club’s attacking coach, potentially opening the door for a move to Super League.

Ennis had only officially joined the Dragons ahead of the 2026 season under Shane Flanagan, who has since left the club just 24 hours ago after a seven-game losing streak to start the new campaign.

The pair famously won the 2016 NRL Grand Final together at Cronulla Sharks, with former hooker Ennis starting in the 14-12 victory over Melbourne Storm to end the club’s 50-year premiership drought.

The former New South Wales Origin representative is highly rated in Australia and is believed to hold ambitions of becoming a head coach. He was previously linked with a move to Hull KR for 2027 as a potential successor to Willie Peters, although those reports were later dismissed.

Ennis was also linked with the Manly Sea Eagles job following Anthony Seibold’s sacking, before club legend Kieran Foran was appointed interim coach for the remainder of the current NRL season.

Assistant coach Dean Young, meanwhile, has taken the reins at St George Illawarra Dragons.

“Mick contributed professionally during his time at the Dragons and has been a valued member of the coaching staff. We thank him for his efforts during his time at the Dragons,” Dragons CEO Tim Watsford said.

“We wish Mick and his family all the very best for the future.”

It’s another potential name for Super League clubs to monitor, with Catalans Dragons, Huddersfield Giants and Hull KR all in the market. Warrington Wolves will also begin their search for Steve McNamara’s replacement, while head coach Sam Burgess remains off-contract at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
