Sheffield singer-songwriter Sam Scherdel has reimagined ‘Somewhere in the Middle’ with the help of the choristers

Sam Scherdel joins forces with Hull NHS Choir to release choral version of his 2M-stream global hit

Hull NHS Choir members have been called on to help record a choral version of a singer’s two-million-stream global hit. Sheffield-born singer-songwriter Sam Scherdel is set to release a different version of his breakout hit, “Somewhere in the Middle”, following a surge in international acclaim following recent tours around the UK and US.

Scherdel first gained widespread attention when his hit single was featured on ITV ’s Love Island, amassing one-million TikTok views in just four days and capturing a global audience. Since then, the single has now surpassed two-million streams.

Now, “Somewhere in the Middle” is being reimagined as a standalone choral piece in collaboration with the Hull NHS Choir, bringing new emotional depth and scale to the song. A joint live performance of the track will form a thrilling part of Sam’s concert that will take place at Social in Hull on Friday, May 22.

The collaboration came about following Sam’s show in Hull during his 2025 tour. Hull NHS Choir leader, Lucy Vere, attended the show and loved Sam’s performance.

She then shared the hit single with the group’s musical director, Mel, as part of a shortlist of potential choir songs for the new year and “Somewhere in the Middle” was introduced to their weekly group in January.

The choir, who have previously performed for King Charles III, went on to create their own arrangement independently. When a clip of the performance began circulating on TikTok, Sam discovered it and immediately recognised its potential to grow into something bigger.

Lucy said: “As a choir, we always tag the artists whose songs we sing on social media but Sam is the very first artist who ever replied. He told us how moved he was by our arrangement, and incredibly, within just six weeks of that original tagged video, we found ourselves in the studio with him recording our version together.

“Our choir exists to support NHS staff to relax, feel good, and reconnect, with music and with each other. To do that, people need to love what they’re singing and feel genuinely valued for what they do.

“The fact that Sam wanted to work with us has given the choir a huge boost and offered our members the experience of a lifetime. We’re so proud to be working with Sam as a Yorkshire talent alongside a Yorkshire‑based choir.”

After initial rehearsals in a hospital education centre, Sam and his band brought the track to life at Yellow Arch Studios (Sheffield) alongside Mercury Prize-nominated producer Colin Elliot. The result is a spine-tingling, stripped-back but expansive version that captures the raw emotion of the original in a completely new way.

Sam said: “I was just stunned seeing the song grow beyond anything I’ve ever released before. Honestly, it brought a tear to my eye hearing it performed like this. It’s something I never thought would be possible when I first put the song out.”

As one of the UK’s most exciting rising songwriters, Sam has already enjoyed an official showcase run at SXSW in Austin, Texas and his ongoing Live Nation tour in the UK, with future dates soon to be confirmed. Now, he is gearing up to announce his highly anticipated EP, “Boy Who Fell To Earth”, that will be landing this summer.

Tickets for the Hull show are on sale now, with Scherdel promising a classic performance that will showcase his renowned mixture of true grit, huge choruses and cinematic energy. The track will be released exclusively on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to charities Health Stars and WISHH.

The Hull NHS Choir was established in 2014 by co‑founders Lucy Vere and Bonnie Gray, with the simple aim of supporting the health and wellbeing of people working in health and social care through the shared experience of singing. What began as a small wellbeing initiative has grown over the past 11 years into a thriving, non‑audition choir bringing together colleagues from across the Hull and East Yorkshire region.
