It could be a description of the here and now in the city and wider county, but the pictures in our gallery below were actually taken 50 years ago, in 1976.
Many of our readers may not have been born when the Hull Daily Mail photographers were out and about capturing these scenes. But there will be plenty, no doubt, who will look back at these black-and-white images and recall the news stories, maybe even some of the people or places that were central to the coverage.
The Spurn Lightship, so recently the subject of headlines as it returned to service as an upgraded and exciting floating museum in Hull, can be seen and the South Docks Road – the previous name for the A63/Castle Street – was also in the news as it opened to two-way traffic.
