The defender is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury

Ryan Giles says he has full belief in Hull City being able to enjoy a successful end to the Championship season, however that looks, with promotion still very much in their own hands.

Sergej Jakirovic’s men returned to action on Good Friday with a 1-1 draw at Oxford United before hosting leaders Coventry City under the MKM Stadium lights on Monday evening, looking to open up a bigger gap to the chasing pack.

Just five points off second and four clear of seventh, City know they can decide the outcome of their season in the remaining seven games, or 10, should they reach the play-off final at Wembley next month.

City’s impressive progress this season is a far cry from the struggles of last year, when they needed goal difference to avoid relegation to League One on the final day of a dismal campaign.

“If I am being totally honest, I think if you had offered anybody this position this time last year, you probably would have snapped their hand off. Everyone can be really proud,” he told the club.

“We are in this position, and we deserve to be here. It is not the case of saying that we have done well this year and shut down if you like. There is something for us to play for, which we are all pushing for and working hard for every single day, but all in all, I am really proud of everybody.

“All the lads have been brilliant. The gaffer has come in in his first season and his staff have been brilliant. The fans have stuck by us all the way and even though we have had our ups and downs, which is the case in anybody’s season, we have always come out the other end. It is going to be tough. It is not going to be easy as we have some tough games coming up. We have got a good group, so I have full belief.”

Backed by a sold-out away following on Good Friday and another big home backing on Easter Monday, Giles knows how important the fans will be in the remaining seven games.

“They have been brilliant all season,” he continued. “We have ups and downs and they are going to be frustrated when we have results that don’t go our way and I fully understand that, but the only thing I will say is we are in a position where we can really achieve something this year, and I am not going to sit here and say that every game is going to go the way we want it to go, because I don’t think it will. That is the nature of the Championship for starters, so I think the togetherness between everybody at the football club with the number of games we have now is really important.

“Let’s see where we go. There is no pressure. Let’s just tackle each game as it comes and with this togetherness all the way from the fans, to the staff, and to us and to absolutely everybody, I don’t see any reason why we can’t achieve what we want to achieve this year, because we have been in and around it all year. Let’s stick together and see where it ends.”
