The 24-year-old forward netted his eighth goal of the season last time out

Kyle Joseph believes Hull City shouldn’t just be looking behind them, as they prepare to return to Championship action for the final seven games of a pulsating season.

The striker delivered a Man of the Match display to set up Matt Crooks before netting the crucial third goal in the 3-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday before the international break.

That victory ensured City remain firmly inside the top six, with a three-point cushion to Wrexham, who were winners against Steel City opposition, beating Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane.

While City were overcoming the league’s bottom side, Middlesbrough were being held at struggling Blackburn Rovers, while Ipswich Town and Millwall played out a 1-1 draw, which meant Sergej Jakirovic’s men closed the gap on the Teessiders to just five points.

City fans may be focused on what happens with seventh place over the remaining seven games, but Joseph is determined to look higher a year on from the struggles against relegation to League One.

“You look at this time last year, we got beaten by Luton at home, going into an international break, and we were probably sat there checking over our shoulder, thinking, ‘oh, this is a bit nervy now’, it’s the other way around now,” he told Hull Live.

“Embrace the challenge. There are five points up to the top two to catch, and I think that’s the way you’ve got to look at it, try and catch the top two to get into those places. There’s no point looking behind us. We were all probably guilty last season of checking everybody’s results.

“We can’t affect what’s going to happen on a Saturday. All we can do is prepare the best that we can to go into a match day. When we come back against Oxford away to make sure we’re best prepared to go and get three points.”
