He will appear at a court in London on Thursday

A 23-year-old man from Hull has today (Wednesday, March 4) been charged with five offences following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East, supported by Humberside Police. Mikka Lee Anderson a white British national from Morpeth Street, Hull, will appear before Westminster Magistrates on Thursday, March 5.

He has been charged with:

  • 1 count of preparing acts of terrorism, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006
  • 1 count of possession of articles for a terrorist purpose, contrary to section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000
  • 2 counts of possessing information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, contrary to Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000
  • 1 count possessing article with blade in a public place, contrary to section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988

Anderson was arrested on Thursday, February 26, as part of a pre-planned intelligence led operation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East, supported by Humberside Police. A residential property in Hull was searched as part of the operation.

A seven-day warrant of further detention was granted by the courts on Friday, February 27. A 23-year-old woman was also arrested on Thursday, February 26. She has since been released without charge.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley is Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East. He said: “We understand that the arrests and police activity that have taken place may have caused concern in the local community.

“Public safety remains our number one priority at all times. An extensive and thorough investigation has led to an individual being charged today.

“We will continue to work alongside Humberside Police and our partners to act on any information that indicates a potential threat to our communities.
